Over 300 people including School of Pharmacy students, faculty, staff, family, and friends gathered in Hogness Auditorium on Monday, September 26th 2011 for the annual Welcome to the Profession Ceremony. New pharmacy students donned their white coats and recited their class pledge.

The UWSOP Class of 2015 started their four year journey at their week long orientation on Monday, September 19^th. During this orientation students meet the each other and the faculty, learn more about the profession of pharmacy and have the opportunity hear about different experiences the UWSOP has in store for them. At the Pharmers Market on Wednesday, September 21^st at the Center of Urban Horticulture, the class of 2015 met upperclassmen who are leaders in the many professional organizations offered at our school. There they discussed the importance of getting involved in professional organizations and how participation in these organizations helps shape you to become a better practitioner.

As we have for some time now we were able to have an IPSF exchange student in Seattle for a month; a little off of tradition which is during spring quarter, we had her here from mid-July to mid-August. Her name is Lineth and she comes from the University of Costa Rica, San Jose. She came to us very knowledgeable as she was in her last semester of study and was well prepared for her time here. Over the course of the 4 weeks she was here she spent fairly equal amounts of time at University of Washington Medical Center, SeaMar Community Pharmacy, and Swedish Medical Center with a little stint at a Fred Meyer Pharmacy. All in all, she got an experience in American style pharmacy that even I am a little envious of and she said she learned a great deal while doing these mini rotations; she also said she felt a tad bit more prepared for her hospital rotations, which she started 2 days after she got home!

Aside from all the work she did she was able to get out and have some fun too. We had a little welcoming get together with a group of UWSOP students, she had a couple days here and there to explore the city herself, I was able to take her out for a few Seattle style meals and out to see the whales off Orcas Island, she spent a couple days with other IPSF members getting up to Mt. Rainer and out on the water at Lake Washington, and she said she had a great time with her housing host who took her out to the Space Needle. According to her she had a great time and according to me it was a pleasure having her here. I look forward to next year’s exchange student, or two, and hope someone from here can enjoy one of these experiences somewhere as well.

April Member of the Month - Steve Erickson

Steve Erickson was selected as Member of the Month for April because of his contributions to UPPOW over the school year. Most notably Steve put together a submission for APhA's Project CHANCE on very short notice and won a $10,000 award to implement the project. Way to go Steve!

Here's what Steve had to say about himself.
"My name is Steve Erickson, and I’m proud to be a member of the class of 2014! I was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington, which is where my family has lived since my great-great grandparents established a farm there in 1898. I grew up working on my family’s farm, where I helped customers in the market store, hand-picked strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries during the summers, and got to do many assorted tasks like laying out irrigation pipes and cleaning barns. Prior to coming to UW, I graduated from WSU Vancouver with a B.S. in Biology. While I was an undergraduate, I volunteered weekly for three and a half years at Southwest Medical Center, where I got my first introduction to pharmacy practice in the anticoagulation clinic and central pharmacy. I want to become a pharmacist because I enjoy helping everybody in need, especially those who are living with chronic medical conditions, and I also like all of the pharmacology and physiology knowledge that pharmacists get to learn and translate into easy-to-understand language for patients. Out of all the different healthcare professionals, pharmacists are able to focus the most on treatments, and this is my favorite aspect of healthcare because it’s what helps patients to get better. I currently volunteer weekly in the pharmacy at the Pioneer Square Clinic, where I enjoy helping patients at the front window and learning more and more each day about how to provide the best care for them. I would be really, really happy to specialize in ambulatory care. In my free time, I like to party it up whenever possible and explore this amazing city called Seattle! I have a pet kitty cat named Jasmine, and she makes my life even more enjoyable with her extraordinary fluffiness, incredible cuteness, and soul-soothing purring."

March Member of the Month - Catlin Tolzmann

Catlin was selected as member of the month for her contributions in helping plan events for UPPOW over the last year. She has been involved from the start of the school year and we think she should be recognized for all the great work she has been doing!

Hi, I'm Catlin Tolzmann. I am a first-year pharmacy student and have lived in Seattle for four and a half years. I grew up in Baltimore and then spent eight years in Chicago, where I met my fiancé. In my previous life, I was a molecular microbiology researcher, so I may pursue a residency in infectious disease pharmacotherapy -- which seems to be a trend among this year's Members of the Month! I am also interested in chronic disease management. Ancient Greek was my major in college, so I'm pretty good at trivia games (as long as it's not about history). In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, singing in a choir, and watching terrible movies.

Legislative Day 2011

Pharmacy legislative day was held on February 25th. The event included a speaker series in the morning, followed by meetings with legislators. Each student met with 1-2 legislators/aides. In total we met with 23 legislators and discussed 4 issues: pharmacy audit, robbery, MTM and funding for higher education.

February Member of the Month - Blaze Paracuelles

Blaze was chosen as February's Member of the Month because of the fabulous work he put into making Winter Mingle a success. As a member of the social committee, Blaze's enthusiasm stood out. He came to all of the Social Committee meetings, promptly answered all email communications, and was willing to go above and beyond in helping out. "My name is Blaze Paracuelles and I am a first year student pharmacist. I received my bachelor’s degree here at the UW in Microbiology. My love of science and teaching is what help led me to the profession of pharmacy. Every summer break, I would go back home to Hawaii and teach middle and high school students about music. I feel that this experience will help me tremendously as a pharmacist because we are teachers too. As for my future plans after graduation, I currently plan on pursuing a residency and specializing in infectious disease pharmacotherapy."

Where were you born? - Puyallup, WA

Do you have siblings? - A younger sister, Amy, in her first year as a

Nope, if I fail out of pharmacy school I will be out in the cold.

What is your previous work experience, if any? - I have done a little
bit of everything in my life: I started out bucking hay bails for
farmers running my own hay crew in Eatonville, then I worked for my
dad for a couple summers as a Pharmacy Assistant, the summer after I
graduated from high school I sold knives for 8 weeks, then I worked
the next summer at Seatac Airport at the Alaska Airlines ticket
counter as a Customer Service Agent, then I went to work for the UWMC
as a Patient Service Specialist in the Main PACU for a year and a half
before I got accepted into the UW pharmacy program and became a
Pharmacy Intern.

Are you involved in community service activities? - Not unless I am
doing something that someone else has planned in the school.

Are you active in a church or spiritual group? - Mostly now only on holidays

What are your hobbies or favorite foods? - Hobbies include: puzzling,

What has been your favorite UPPOW event so far and why? - The Annual
Auction, it was a ton of fun and helped get me paid :)

Why is involvement in your profession important to you? - Because if
we don't fight for our profession and continue to improve our
profession we will become obsolete pill counters. My involvement has
spurred from a desire to learn about the profession of pharmacy
outside of the classroom and library. To get real life knowledge and
experience from practicing pharmacists and pharmacists who are
fighting to make a difference for our future is so rewarding and
enlightening and something you will never find in the classroom or
library.

What do you want to do when you finish at UWSOP? - Go to work for my
father, take over the family business, expand to 5-6 pharamcies,
become WSPA President, serve on various NCPA steering committees,
retire on a yacht on Lake Washington and go to every UW home football
and basketball game

65 UWSOP Students Attend Course on Emergency Contraception

To receive the Emergency Contraception Certificate, students completed a didactic study portion, consisting of reading an article and completing a quiz, and attended the practical taught by Jenny Arnold, WSPA Director of Pharmacy Practice and UWSOP alumnus. Student pharmacists asked many great questions and were very engaged with the material presented.

December Member of the Month - Misty Sullivan

UPPOW's Member of the Month for December is Misty Sullivan. Misty did an awesome job as part of the UW team that submitted a video titled "Pharm Walking" for the APhA-ASP PharmFlix competition. Following is some info written by Misty so we can all learn more about her!

I am a 2nd year pharmacy student. I’ve worked as a pharmacy technician since 1997. The majority of my pharmacy experience is from the 8 years I worked at Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon. Previously, I was a visual communications/graphic arts major and attended the Art Institute for a short time. In 2004, I decided to pursue my PharmD as part-time student. I feel fortunate to have so many years of pharmacy experience to draw on; it has been very beneficial to my learning. After graduation, I would like to do a residency that will prepare me to work in an inpatient hospital setting. I am completely fascinated by infectious diseases and hope to work on an infectious disease clinical team.

November Member of the Month - Chi Mac

Chi has contributed to multiple UPPOW events and even attended events over the summer! Following is more info written by Chi, our very first UPPOW Member of the Month, so that we can all learn more about how great she is!

Currently, I am in my second year of pharmacy school, and I have been a student at the University of Washington for over six years. I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health at this university before I entered pharmacy school. My favorite school events are health fairs; I like to perform health screenings and to educate patients about ways to improve their health. When I graduate, I would like to do a residency to become more competent to address challenges in complex drug therapy. I believe that our profession is changing constantly, and the skills that pharmacists need to remain competent will continue to grow.

Besides pharmacy, I like spending time with my family. I often go jogging with my father and occasionally go shopping with my mother on the weekends. In the past summer, I had fun traveling with my mother to Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon. I also like to listen to Chinese music, and read mysteries and suspense novels when I have time.

Senator Ed Murray Visits UW - October 29, 2010

Huey Yu, Director of the Student Political Advocacy Network (SPAN), started the forum with a smart introduction to the extent of education pharmacy students receive and the role and responsibilities of pharmacists in health care.

Senator Murray then introduced himself by describing recent legislation he has been involved in including anti-discrimination and domestic partnership bills, and mentioned his meeting with a group of us two years ago at Legislative Day 2009 (some of whom were with us for this forum also).

A rich Q&A exchange followed between the students and Senator Murray.

Some initial discussion surrounded the 2010 Legislative Session and the three main bills students went to Olympia to promote (elevation of penalties for pharmacy robbery, Medicaid audit reform, and promotion of MTM services by pharmacists). Senator Murray spoke about the legislative process and some of the road blocks that can happen along the way.

This led to an instructive discussion by the senator regarding state revenue and the very difficult decisions before those responsible for balancing the budget, and how the programs at stake when it comes to state expenditures are mainly higher education, healthcare, and prisons.

With regard to pharmacy robbery, a student shared that she has personally been present during three separate pharmacy robberies, and has witnessed the problem firsthand; Senator Murray agreed that no one should have to work in conditions with that level of risk. One student asked whether enhanced sentencing actually serves as a deterrent to crimes, which led to a good discussion about the simple benefit of keeping violent offenders off the streets, vs. actual crime deterrence, and how the effect may vary based on the type of crime in question.

At one point, Senator Murray mentioned his dependence on friends with expertise on various issues to keep him informed on different topics. Someone proposed the idea of a student-led team to provide Senator Murray with fact-based answers to pharmacy-related questions, so that we might be a resource to him with his work on the Health and Long-Term Care Committee. This was received as a great idea on both sides, and later discussion surrounded the recruitment of an inter-disciplinary group for the same purpose, to provide perspectives from students of our affiliated health professions as well.

Following the conclusion of the forum, several students led Senator Murray and Scott, his aide, on a tour of the School of Pharmacy, with stops in Dana Hammer's Top 200 Medications class and Jeannine McCune's Therapeutics lecture, the PCLC, and a brief stop in the administrative offices where the senator was able to meet Dean Baillie, Jeff Rochon, Ryan Oftebro, and Peggy Odegard.

NCPA Conference in Philadelphia

This year’s National Community Pharmacists Association conference in Philadelphia was an exciting one!

The UW chapter took home the 2nd Runner Up to the “Chapter of the Year Award,” recognizing us as the third best chapter of the nation. For this achievement our chapter received $500 to use for future UW-NCPA events. In addition, two UW students received NCPA Presidential Scholarships. Andrew Heinz (a current second year student) and Linda Lei (a current third year student) both received scholarship amounts for $2000, as well as complimentary registration to the conference and a $300 travel stipend.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that Andrew Heinz was elected to be the President-Elect for the NCPA National Student Leadership Council. This was exciting news for all of us and we believe that UW’s representation at the national convention this year will create the momentum we need to strengthen our chapter even more.

Over the next year, we plan to further build our Business Plan Workshops into a series of skill-based presentations, as well as supporting the current business plan teams. We also plan to participate in the MTM Challenge, Legislative Advocacy Challenge, as well as encourage attendance to the National Legislation & Government Affairs conference. By doing so, we hope to further increase UW’s representation at the next national conference and bring home the Chapter of the Year Award next time!

Clinical Skills Competition - October 21st, 2010

Eighteen UWSOP teams competed in round one of this year's ASHP Clinical Skills Competition.
Teams of two students were given two hours to work up a patient case and prepare a written care plan for that patient. Then the teams presented their case to a panel of expert judges, Drs. Doug Black, Lingtak Chan, and Elizabeth James.

This year, the judges followed a different format for evaluation. Teams of first- and second-year students were given verbal feedback on their performance to better prepare them for future competitions. Teams of third- and fourth-year students were evaluated numerically.

A special thank you goes out to our judges for donating their time to make this event possible, to our ASHP Liaisons Stephanie and Sophia for organizing the event, and to the competitors for their participation.

The winners, Brent Leithauser and Zach Conroy, both of the class of 2011, will go on to represent UWSOP at the national competition in Disneyland! Good luck guys!

IPSF Trivia Night Raised over $1250!

On October 18th, IPSF and Bridges to Health hosted a trivia night at the Pied Piper Ale House in Ravenna, raising over $1250 to benefit Pharmabridge. The Pharmabridge program works to promote pharmacy services in developing and transitional countries.

Thanks to the Pied Piper Ale House for donating beverage proceeds and prizes, and thanks to the local businesses and our UWSOP professional student organizations that also donated prizes for the event! Way to go IPSF and Bridges to Health!

Andrew Heinz

NCPA National Student Leadership Council President-Elect

I am a second year student and I have lived in Washington my whole life and attended the University of Washington for my entire collegiate career. My family has owned pharmacies for the past 16 years, so I have grown up most of my life working in an independent pharmacy in some capacity. I am very passionate about independent pharmacy, pharmacy ownership, and legislative advocacy.

I decided to run for this position because the current president of this council, a fourth year student from WSU, came and spoke to our school about NCPA and the leadership opportunities they have to offer. I was really inspired by his enthusiasm and involvement in effecting change for our profession, so I decided to run for the position.

My role is to assist the President in his presidential duties as well as be a liaison for my assigned region. I disseminate information to the chapter officers at all of the pharmacy schools in my region about national meetings, national challenge competition submissions deadlines, scholarship deadlines, etc. I am the go to person to field all questions from the pharmacy schools in my region.

The benefit of holding a national position is it gives you first hand insight into the organization. It allows you to get involved in the planning and organizing of student programming at meetings as well as help innovate and update challenge competition criteria. Also, being involved in national leadership the organization helps to pay for travel and lodging to national meetings.

My goals during my term as presidency are to help create regional meetings for students to attend. I feel that this will help boost interest and involvement in NCPA. I also hope to boost involvement and interest in NCPA at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy.

Jonathan Chenoweth

APhA-ASP Policy Standing Committee, Member

My name is Jonathan Chenoweth and I am a 4^th year student pharmacist at the University of Washington. This year in addition to the excitement of rotations I am gratefully able to participate as a member of the Policy Standing Committee with the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).

Throughout my time at UWSOP I was excited to discover many opportunities to participate in pharmacy events that occurred beyond the classroom. I was particularly drawn to the policy arena and the impact it can have on the profession of pharmacy. Each year I would look forward to the Legislative Day in Olympia when the student pharmacists get their opportunity to remind the state legislators of our impact with patients and the issues we feel are important. Success in the policy arena is a long process but I enjoy every step.

After attending MRM and the APhA Annual meeting I was intrigued by the work the Standing Committees do for APhA-ASP at the national level. I was fortunate enough to have a fellow stud

ent pharmacist from UWSOP as a member of the policy committee at that time to turn to for advice. After speaking with her and participating in additional committees within both APhA-ASP and APhA, I applied and was appointed by the National Executive Committee to the Policy Standing Committee.

As a member of a Standing Committee (there are 4; Policy, Education, Communication, and Awards), you get the opportunity to implement the proposals passed by student pharmacists at the Annual meeting, establish goals you wish to achieve, and meet other student pharmacists from around the country. The additional networking opportunities have been a real surprise addition to this role, helping me to develop relationships that I know will strengthen my professional career.

I encourage anyone who has sought leadership roles at the local level and is looking to expand their horizons or look for new challenges to consider applying for a standing committee with APhA-ASP and if I think it would be a good fit for you I just might seek you out. Hello UWSOP! My name is Karen Craddick, I am a P3 and am serving in a one year position as a Regional Delegate for the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP). As I come to the end of my term at the APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM), I look back on my experience with great memories and a sincere appreciation for APhA-ASP and the hard work of many individuals all over the country. As a Regional Delegate (RD), I have gotten to know amazing pharmacists and student pharmacists from all over the country. A big part of my job was working with the other seven Regional Delegates to decide which resolutions passed at the MRM’s would be voted on at the Annual Meeting last March in DC. We started with 100+ resolutions and narrowed it down to 5! We then further developed the policy ideas. The resolutions that are passed at the Annual meeting are implemented by the APhA-ASP Policy Standing Committee. (p.s. the APhA Annual Meeting is in Seattle this year on March 25^th-28^th – hope to see you there!)

I ran for the RD position because I am passionate about advancing the profession of pharmacy and I wanted to get more involved with APhA-ASP. Surprisingly during my term as RD I discovered my passion and interest in health policy! I now understand how my interest in policy and passion for the profession are married and work synergistically. Serving as a RD has been a very valuable experience, I have learned SO many things that I never would have learned in the class room and have met amazing people along the way. As a result, I have a new direction and dream for my career and the future of pharmacy.

Steven Larson

ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum Student Society Development Advisory Group Member

This is my second year serving on an advisory group for the ASHP PSF. Last year I had the opportunity to serve on the ASHP PSF Meetings and Programming Advisory Group (now called the Education and Programming Advisory Group). My experience with the MPAG turned out to be even better than I expected, which is why I decided to apply again this year. Through the advisory groups I have been able to create friendships with and be mentored by pharmacy students from across the country. The knowledge I have gained by serving in these positions has helped me better understand my future profession. While I have been able to help improve the ASHP PSF on the national level, my greatest hope is that by serving on these advisory groups I will be able to help others navigate through the difficulties of selecting an area of pharmacy in which to practice.

Greetings, and happy fall everyone! I’m Sara McElroy and I am excited to serve you this year as the UPPOW/APhA-ASP President. I hail from the East Coast…I grew up in Connecticut and lived for 4 years in North Carolina before moving to Seattle. I love to travel (the picture is of me in Maokong, Taipei), hike, cook, spend time with friends and, despite some ridiculous/embarrassing slow motion falls this summer; I am training for long-distance cycling…wish me luck!

I hope you had a restful summer, because the incredible UPPOW board has been hard at work planning events (familiar and innovative) for this upcoming year. It has been an honor to work with everyone on the board… they are passionate about making UPPOW everything you can hope for. UPPOW President Elect - Lexie Lindner

Hey Everyone! I’m Lexie Lindner and am currently UPPOW President-Elect. For all of you who have no idea what that actually means (I didn’t get it initially either!), that means that I am currently acting more as a Vice-President, but will become UPPOW President next year. I am a second year and am new to Seattle. My husband and I moved here from Madison, WI last year. I am a Badger through and through (and an honorary Husky fan)! No dissin’ my Packers either. Don’t talk to me about Brett Favre, though. It’s a sure way to get on my bad side. Also, I love to go out with friends whenever my wallet (and my schedule) will allow it!

I work at Highline Medical Center in Burien, WA by SeaTac airport. Right now, I want to go into Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant while concurrently holding a position as an adjunct faculty member at a University.

Hi! I’m Stephanie and I'll be your ASHP Senior Liaison this year. I’m originally from Florida, but moved to Seattle in 2007. Hiking around here is awesome!

Hi Everyone! My name is Sophia and I will be your ASHP Junior Liaison this year. I’m currently a second year student and I also did my undergraduate degree at UW. I’ve lived in the Seattle area my whole life so I do enjoy hiking, camping, etc. I like spending time with my family, traveling, trying new foods, and taking my dog to the dog park. I currently intern at Swedish Medical Center and at Target Pharmacy, so I hope I will be helpful in knowing what it’s like in these two areas of pharmacy. I am looking forward to helping you guys take advantage of what ASHP-SSHP has to offer and providing resources for those of you interested in learning more about hospital pharmacy. For those of you interested in pursuing residencies, we have tons of resources for you as well. Remember, the ASHP student chapter should be about you, so if you have any ideas or see something you would like our chapter to do, Stephanie and I would love your input. Carina Wolf – Director of IPSF

Hi, my name is Carina and I am excited to be Director of IPSF this year. I was born and raised in Missouri, and I have a Biochemistry BS degree from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. Throughout my life I have had amazing opportunities to travel, and I love studying other cultures.

I currently live in Kirkland, and in my free time I enjoy exercising, knitting, juggling, playing MtG, and fighting ninjas. This is my second year of pharmacy school, and I look forward to working with all of you this year!

Dayl Eccles - IPSF Jr. Liaison

I'm excited to start my second year as a Husky in the lovely UWSOP. In my previous life, I received a BS in Biology from Colorado State University. Studying abroad in Kawagoe, Japan for a semester helped me earn an Asian Studies Certificate. After working with post-mortem tissue donation as an eye banker in Denver, Colorado for a couple years, I delved into the field of pharmacy by becoming a technician at Walgreens.

In my spare time (haha) I enjoy lounging with my two kitties while watching sci-fi or listening to Fleetwood Mac/Tom Petty/The Reverend Horton Heat (among all other sorts of music), eating new foods, and exploring both my backyard and the rest of the world. I love meeting people, so don't hesitate to approach me!

Linda Lei – NCPA Sr. Liaison

Hi everyone, welcome back! I'm Linda and I will be serving as your NCPA Sr. Liaison. We have an exciting year, packed with events for you. We even added a new legislative conference in D.C. that would now be reimbursable via UPPOW, so stay tuned for all the new changes. To give you a little background on me, I was originally from California before moving up to Seattle. I'm a huge fan of food and would always be up for trying new things. I am currently a 2nd year student living in Kirkland. I am originally from Indiana and have lived in the Philadelphia area as well. I have been in Seattle for 6 years now; I am married and have a dog named Trinity. I do not have a BA or BS but did put in a lot of years towards a Chemistry degree split between Purdue (Indiana) and UW with a few credits from community college. I do have an Associate’s Degree and would probably need less than a year to complete a BA. I work at a great place called Valley View Pharmacy in Monroe. After I graduate, I plan to stay in community pharmacy.

Hi, my name is Karen Craddick. I am the Washington State Pharmacy Association (WSPA) Sr. Liaison. I am passionate about changing the way you and I practice pharmacy and maintaining WA as one of the best places to practice pharmacy. WSPA's events will allow us to work together to increase our legislator's and the public's understanding about the value pharmacists add to the health care team. I grew up in California, went to undergrad at Seattle Pacific University and am an intern at Harborview Medical Center. I am a 2^nd year pharmacy student. I grew up in Oregon and have been in Seattle for 7 years now. My undergraduate degree is from Seattle Pacific University; it’s a BA in English Literature. Not surprisingly, I fell backward into a career in pharmacy. Currently, I am an intern at Safeway Pharmacy

My husband is also a graduate student at UW in the doctor of physical therapy program, when we can take time away from our studies we enjoying traveling cooking. As you may have guessed from my BA, I am an avid reader. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and classmates, and enjoying the awesome city that we live in.

Hi! My name is Cheryl Morton. I am the Director of Operation Immunization. I am a 3^rd year pharmacy student, who migrated up the coast from Los Angeles 11 years ago. My two great passions are food and the outdoors. You can always find me with my husband, Greg, cooking up a storm or backpacking in the Cascades. Besides food and the outdoors, I have a passion for operation immunization because it showed me what a difference a pharmacist can make in the community.

Heather Surerus-Lopez - Director of Operation Diabetes
Hi, I’m Heather Surerus-Lopez, a third-year pharmacy student who moved here from the Chicago area (Go Cubs!) after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with a minor in French about 15 years ago. After working as a plant tissue culture scientist at Weyerhaeuser for about 12 years, I made the switch to Pharmacy to get involved in patient education and care. I enjoy gardening, fish-keeping, bird watching, reading, watching movies, hiking, spending time with my husband of 15 years, and playing with my dog and two cats. As Director of Operation Diabetes for 2010-2011, I hope to generate interest in the topic of diabetes and provide opportunities to get people involved in diabetes-specific patient care.

Crystal Tsui - Treasurer

I’m a 3^rd year student. I did half of my undergrad at Western Washington University in Bellingham and finished it at UW with a degree in Medical Technology. Then here I am in Pharmacy School.

I like to eat out because I really enjoy food, especially trying new food and places. White rice is my favorite food. I don’t think I can live without rice. I recently got a puppy and I love to spend time with him. It is a White West Highland Terrier. He is almost 10 months old now. We like to go to Bellevue Down Town Park and play with other dogs.

Jenny He - Director of Social Programs

I’m a 3^rd year from Des Moines, WA. I completed my pharmacy school prerequisites at UW, where I was the President of the Pre-Pharmacy Club and a member of the Executive Planning Committee of the UW Relay for Life. This is my fourth year as a Resident Adviser in the UW residence halls and my fifth year living on campus.

While there are no pets allowed in on-campus housing, I do have a fat cat named Binky at home with my parents in Des Moines. I am inclined to say that he is not actually *that* fat but that he just has big bones (he weighs more than 20 pounds and is about two feet in length, not including this tail)… In my spare time, I like to read, watch TV and movies, and try new things. At the moment, I’m interested in exploring more about rock climbing and cycling. I’ve worked as an intern in a Rite Aid Pharmacy, but I am currently interning at Highline Medical Center.

As the Director of Social Programs, I hope to implement some new social activities while also continuing the traditional ones. I’m very excited about the school-wide Assassins game that I have planned for Autumn Quarter and hope that everyone who participates will have a good time with it.

Marie Horner - Director of Professional Programs

I am in my second year at UWSOP, and I have basically been living in Seattle since 1998. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and frequently find myself missing the sun and ocean. I graduated from Seattle University with a BS in Diagnostic Ultrasound, and I have worked as a Cardiac Sonographer in both hospital and clinic settings. I love interacting with people and helping promote patient health, and decided to pursue a career in pharmacy. When I can find the time and the people, I love to play volleyball. As I get older, my knees do not seem to appreciate the hardwood gym floors, so my favorite is to play doubles in the sand. When summer rolls around, you can often find me down at Golden Gardens on Friday afternoons playing until it is too dark to see the ball! I look forward to making the most of my time here by getting involved in various activities and encouraging others to do the same!

Anne Spengler - Director of Media and Publications

I’m a 2^nd year originally from Richland, WA, but I’ve been in Seattle for almost 10 years. In 2005, I graduated from UW with a BS in Medical Technology, minoring in Chemistry. After working in Clinical Microbiology, I decided to make the switch pharmacy,

I enjoy taking my doggie for walks at Green Lake and trying to convince her to run with me, which rarely happens. To get my running time in I train for and run short races in the Seattle area. I also like playing word games (crosswords, scrabble, jumble, etc), listening to KEXP and NPR, and drinking coffee!

NCPA hosted a legislative dinner featuring speakers Holly Henry & Dedi Hitchens. It was a great venue to help students understand the policies in our state and nation wide that affect pharmacy practice. The two guest speakers shared their knowledge about all the key issues. Student pharmacists really appreciated all the insights provided by the speakers.

May 01, 2010 - American Diabetes Association Diabetes Expo

During this event, student pharmacists staffed a University of Washington School of Pharmacy booth where they advocated for the involvement of pharmacists in diabetes care and answered patients' questions about medications, supplements, immunizations, etc. Student pharmacists also provided clinical screenings and counseling. They did blood glucose and blood pressure screenings, and they calculated patients' BMIs and counseled them on the importance of nutrition, exercise, and maintenance of a healthy weight for preventing and controlling diabetes. They also counseled patients on the results of their HbA1c test (a screening provided by another group). In addition to 4 faculty members, 3 pharmacists from the community also attended the event to precept and mentor students.

This event was a huge success with roughly 5400 individuals in attendance. It was a great learning experience for the students who were able to help out as well as a great opportunity to show the community some of the many services pharmacists are able to provide.

A student pharmacist exchanged to UWSOP from the Netherlands. She visited several area hosptials, pharmacies, and the Poison Center. Chapter members introduced her to the Seattle area and its sights, and included her in many pharmacy school activities. She shared with us about pharmacy practice in the Netherlands.

This years annual UPPOW auction was a huge success - raising nearly $12,000 for reimbursement of student travel to professional conferences. The theme was pirates of the Caribbean and students had a great time transforming the South Campus Center with Pirate Flags, treasure chests and other themed items.

February 9, 2010: Pharmacy Legislative Day

Pharmacy students from U.W. and W.S.U. joined forces and headed to the state capitol for Pharmacy Legislative Day. The event started off with an address from Senator Linda Evans Parlett, followed by WSPA Director of Government Affairs, Dedi Hitchins and WSPA Chief Executive officer, Jeff Rochon.

Students met with their Senators and House reps and had the chance to talk about Pharmacy Robbery, MTM and DSHS audit bills. We also hosted a health fair with booths for blood glucose testing, bone density readings, body composition and much more.

A huge thanks to all the students who made this event possible; to Brent Liethauser and Karen Craddick for all their hard work and planning and to Svetlana Nozdrina for taking hundreds of pictures to document this event.

Second year pharmacy student Karen Craddick was recently selected to be our region's ASHP-ASP Delegate. The following is an excerpt from a write up from Karen in regards to her new position, the extended version will appear in our Winter tablet.

"I am serving in a one year position as a Regional Delegate for the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP). The University of Washington School of Pharmacy (UWSOP) is in Region 7 with other APhA-ASP Chapters from schools of pharmacy from Oregon, Utah, Idaho and Montana. In total, APhA-ASP is comprised of 8 regions. Each region has 1 Regional Delegate. As Regional Delegate, I am responsible for promoting policy and advocacy activities in Region 7.

As Regional Delegate I serve as a member of the APhA-ASP Resolutions Committee where we rank and decide which proposed resolutions that have been submitted by APhA-ASP chapters will be voted on during the APhA Annual Meeting in March... The goal is that our passed resolutions will be implemented by APhA. The proposed resolutions range in topic from patient safety, reimbursement, the role of the pharmacist in patient care and advancing the practice of pharmacy.

I am serving as Regional Delegate because I am passionate about advancing the profession of pharmacy and I’m interested in health care policy and public health. APhA-ASP has been instrumental in advancing pharmacy practice and I would like to help continue this legacy... As student pharmacists we are in a powerful position to shape the future of our profession and improve the health of our communities. We can effect change through perfecting and expanding our clinical skills, but we must not forget that LEADERSHIP is essential to effecting change... My goal as Regional Delegate is to encourage student pharmacists to become involved in policy and advocacy issues now and in the future."

November 30 - December 2, 2009: World Aids Day

World AIDS Day efforts consisted of fundraising for a local organization that works with women with HIV/AIDS and culminated in an educational speaking event by an AIDS patient. More than $400 was raised by student pharmacists for donation from over 85 t-shirt and countless AIDS ribbon sales.

The following is a write up by 1st year UW School of Pharmacy Student Steve Larson, who was selected to be a member of the ASHP-ASP Advisory Group.

Perhaps it is odd but I came to pharmacy school with a plan to become a specialized pharmacy practitioner. During the years leading up to pharmacy school I considered going into drug research, infectious disease pharmacy, and oncology pharmacy practice. Through the process of time and by gaining different experiences, oncology pharmacy became my area of interest and focus. This interest led me to talk to Brian and Stephanie at Pack Forest and express my intention in joining ASHP, the group to which I would belong as an oncology pharmacist. It was during this chat that I learned of the position on the ASHP Advisory Group for a first year pharmacy student. After doing some research I decided to apply for the position because I thought it would be a great way for me to be able to reach out to and assist other pharmacy students. As a member of the ASHP Advisory Group I thought I could help others gather the information they needed to make career impacting decisions. It just so turns out that this is what I will be doing for the next year. As a member of the Meetings and Programming Advisory Group, I have accepted the responsibility to ensure the information shared at the MCM is contemporary, interesting, relevant, and easily accessible. My main goal this year is to help first year pharmacy students, many of whom are new to the world of health care, feel comfortable at the MCMs so they can focus on learning something directly applicable to them. If you are going to the MCM this year, please find me and let me know some of your thoughts and ideas on how to improve it; ie. what you liked and didn’t like, topics you wish were addressed, etc.

To work toward the goal of promoting pharmacy education, UW's IPSF chapter hosted an International Textbook Trivia Night to take on the task of fundraising to provide professional textbooks in developing countries under the Pharmabridge program.

Over 70 people participated in the trivia night hosted at Pied Piper's Ale House in Ravenna, and over $1,100 was raised for Pharmabridge. Prizes were generously donated by local businesses and student organizations in the School of Pharmacy.

The texts will be purchased, and are hoped to be delivered in person to the Jimma School of Pharmacy in Ethiopia by UW Representatives Don Downing, Andy Stergachis, and Peggy Odegard.

October 16-18, 2009: APhA Midyear regional meeting in Portland

This years midyear regional meeting was held in Portland, OR and it was a blast. The University of Washington was well represented. The theme for the social the first night was the Oregon Trail and first year representatives of the University of Washington one a prize for the best costume as they teamed together to make a wagon - oxen & all! Way to go class of 2013! Many of our policies were passed and our very Karen Craddick is the new APhA regional delegate.

The NCPA 111th Annual Convention at New Orleans was a blast! Our team competed live and won this year's Pruitte Schutte Student Business Plan Competition. That's right! Our first time ever national championship. Thanks for all your support UWSOPers! Besides going out to Bourbon St, swamp tours, haunted tours and eating delicious Southern food, we enjoyed a lovely dinner with our sweet faculty, independent pharmacy owners, and supportive parents. It was amazing. Way to start a school year!

With the 2008-2009 school year winding down, 15 student volunteers and more than 20 other UW pharmacy students made the trek across the state to meet with pharmacists and student pharmacists from all over the northwest at another great WSPA Northwest convention in Coeur d’Alene, ID. The WSPA annual Northwest Convention provides students the unique opportunity to hear from local colleagues and leaders about crucial issues facing pharmacy today.

With more than 30 separate seminars, there were CE sessions to suit any pharmacy interest. There were clinical lectures on subjects like fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and chemotherapeutic agents; business management sessions with talks about Medicare Part B & D, and pharmacy security; and finally important Washington State legislative updates.

But it wasn’t all lectures and CE in Coeur d’Alene. Students also took part in Coeur d’Alene pub crawls, dined on gourmet cooking at the evening gala, and danced the night away in the “Shore Lounge.” In the end, the 2009 Northwest Convention was educational, inspiring and most of all, really fun!

May 21-24, 2009: Border to Border

While not an official UPPOW event, UPPOW supports the student pharmacists who participate in Border to Border, a 325-mile relay across Washington state. The event was established by former pharmacy student Patrick Gallagher in honor of his father, and funds raised go to support the American Cancer Society.

The Spring Independent Pharmacy Tour on May 9th, 2009 gave us a refreshing view of the variety of ways that independent pharmacies can serve their community. We visited Katterman’s Pharmacy in Sandpoint, Bob Johnson’s Pharmacy in Greenwood and one of the newest Kelly Ross Pharmacies, the Long Term Care Pharmacy on Eastlake. Our small group of student tourists spent the day enjoying the sun while learning from these successful and friendly community pharmacists. It was a genuinely enjoyable trip!

Over 20 student pharmacists gathered in the early morning hours on April 5th to volunteer at this year's Walk MS. 10,000 participants and volunteers attended the event, which raised an estimated $2,000,000.00 to support multiple sclerosis research and treatments.

It’s the only place where you will find Student Pharmacists, Residencies, and Mickey Mouse in the same area code!! The conference took place in Orlando, FL from December 7 to December 11, 2008. Students, residencies, and pharmacists from across the country convened at the Orange County Convention Center for 4 days of education, networking, and information exchange.

Plan ahead for next year- Midyear 2009 will take place in Sin City (Las Vegas)!

November 2008: WSPA Annual Meeting

In November students and pharmacists attended the WSPA annual meeting at the Tulalip Convention Center. The program was filled with many valuable CE events. The new board of directors was initiated, and WSPA said goodbye to Rod Schaefer who has spent the last 15 years as the CEO of the organization. Jeff Rochon will be taking over as the interim CEO while a search is conducted for the position.

October 11-15 2008: NCPA Convention

The NCPA’s 110th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition took place from October 11th to the 15th this year at Tampa, Florida. The convention began with an awesome Chapter Officer’s Breakfast where we had the opportunity to talk to NCPA chapter officers from all over the nation. The highlight was seeing our past NCPA chapter president Emily Schulze present on the Political Advocacy Challenge! She did a wonderful job! The rest of the convention was just as exciting with a broad array of programs such as educational workshops on pharmacy ownership, social events, student business plan competition, and the trade exposition. Additionally, the speakers were engaging and the food was delicious making this a very memorable convention.

Next October, you can attend NCPA’s 111th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition taking place in the exciting city of New Orleans!

2008 ASHP Clinical Skills Competition

Fourteen teams composed of students from all four classes competed in this evet, which was a huge success. We would like to congratulate this year's winning team Nick Au and Adam Clemens, from the class of 2009. Nick and Adam continued on to represent the UWSOP and compete in the National Clinical Skills Competition at the 2008 ASHP Midyear conference in Orlando on December 6th, 2008. Great job guys and thanks again to everyone that came out to compete - we hope to see you again next year!

Salvation Army ARC Health Fair

UWSOP students, in conjunction with Micki Kedzierski's Pharm 591 class on community collaborations in health care, helped put on the second annual Salvation Army ARC health fair this fall. The ARC is a residential rehabilitation program for approximately 100 men and women recovering from alcohol and/or drug addiction and mental illness. Overall the health fair was a huge success for both the students and the beneficiaries.

Opperation Immunization 2008 Update

This fall we were able to vaccinate almost 100 people in the Seattle area with a donation of flu vaccination from Safeway. Our goal this year is to reach out to under served populations who might otherwise not be able to get the protection
they need; so far it has been a great success.
We have had the opportunity to immunize people at both the Salvation Army ARC and the Aloha Inn.
In addition, we had over 70 students take the Pharm 531 Community Pharmacy-based Immunization and Health Screening Programs elective before the fall quarter, enabling them to practice in community pharmacies throughout the area and receive their immunization certification.

Class of 2012 Welcome to the Profession Ceremony

This year’s Welcome to the Profession Ceremony took place a few days prior to school following a professionalism workshop held during orientation week. This event provides a chance for the incoming class to present their Pledge of Professionalism highlighting the duties and qualities they expect of themselves throughout their career in the pharmacy profession. At the “Welcome to the Profession Ceremony” each incoming PharmD student is recognized and receives their White Coat from the Dean. This year the outgoing Dean and three guest speakers were invited to share their words of encouragement to the incoming class, including: Sid Nelson (Outgoing Dean of UWSOP), Jeff Rochon (WSPA Director of Professional Development), Don Downing (Clinical Professor at UWSOP), Elyse Tung (Class of 2008 Graduate and Swedish Medical Center PGY1 Resident). Each spoke on behalf of the importance of getting involved in professional activities to enhance life-long learning and career development. All the current students, faculty and alumni are happy to welcome the Class of 2012 and support them in their time at the University of Washington and future in the profession of pharmacy.
